8-track

The 8 tracecassette (also known as eight-track of 8-track ) is a cassette with in it a magnetstrip with 8 tracks which is made in 1956. In the 60 years of the 20th century these casettes were used for recording and showing music, popular for a long time, especially in carradio's the name uses the cassette because the band has 8 audiotracks , for which 4 stereo-recordings can be recorded parallel. Because the magnetheasd went crossways in the direction of the tape, we could enable between the 4 recordings. The cassette is wrapped around a reel and the endings are welded against each other which makes it an endless tape. A metal strip has been attached to the weld, on which contact is operated so that the heads switch cyclical to the next recording. Most play back equipment has a buton which lets you switch manually. Because of the friction on the reel the tape will be streched and varies the speed, which doesn't benefit the sound. Although cassettes were very popular at the time, especially for in the car, where audio quality was of less importance than in home. The 8-track cassette dissapeared at the start of the 70's of the 20th century, to make way for the more popular compact cassette.

PCM Multi audio

The Sony EV-S900 (Hi8), Sony EV-S800, Sony EV-S700U, and Pioneer VE-D77 (Video8) all supported a mode called "PCM Multi Audio Recording". While other 8mm decks supported stereo PCM recording, these units provided five additional stereo PCM tracks that were recorded in the video area of the signal. This allowed 8mm tapes to hold 6 "parallel" tracks of audio, each up to 4 hours long (in LP mode). Only one stereo track could be recorded or listened to at a time, and tracks were selected with the "PCM Multi Audio" selector button.

For digitizing we use Multi PCM audio tapes from de Sony EV-S700ES recorder en de TASCAM DA-98HR.
